Monday, August 15th, 2011, the Black Canyon Railroad left it’s home of thirty five years in the Arizona Room of Construction Superintendent Harold Shelton’s home. Having been built in place, the pieces were very difficult to get out, especially the Exodus Yard end.

View where Jonah Junction used to be. Obadiah peninsula to the left; Exodus to the right beyond Isaiah.

Obadiah peninsula moved out of the way, up against Jeremiah.

Left end of Jeremiah, the duckunder goes there. Alpha is located in the missing piece.

Obadiah peninsula headed around the pool and out the gate.

Getting ready to move Isaiah. Note the lack of a roundhouse. These two pieces had to be moved forward until the Arcadia door allowed three inches of wiggle room to get them apart; they had been built to very tight tolerances.

Jeremiah and Omega have been removed; cleaning the area for the big removal.

Next up – pictures of the new home, in progress, at An Affair With Trains. The general plan is to rewire each section prior to the new placement. There is a rumor that Ring Engineering has been rather generous in allowing a test of their new radio control system.

Sorry For The Inconvenience

Thank you, and keep on railroading!

Moving

The physical railroad is moving.

At about 15′ wide and 18′ long, it’s not moving in one piece. Harold originally built it with transportation in mind (although, after thirty years, transporting it did not stay at the top of the priority list) and it is therefore built in sections.

The first cut was made by Harold himself. After about four hours of work, Richard, Bob and Cary were able to get the first section separated from the rest. Two more followed in quick succession.

A dinner break was called before the final business meeting at the current location. The operators of An Affair With Trains were in attendance, to answer any questions about the destination and the disposition of the railroad. The Museum will still be holding operating sessions on the railroad in it’s new home in the back of the store. Yes, the layout will be on display and have operating trains on it, visible anytime the store is open (Tuesday thru Friday 10-5:30, Saturday 9-3, and Sunday 1-4). Pardon the dust while we get the layout ready for it’s public appearance.

Big Changes Ahead

Nothing is final or definite yet – however, we are holding a special meeting prior to the regularly scheduled operating session on Friday, June 2, 2011.

New Power

The railroad has new power supplies and distributors, and is ready to run again. On April 1, the club met to do a little cleaning and adjusting. Friday, April 8, will be a business meeting. The next operating session will be Friday, April 15th.

Success!

Power and control have been restored to the railroad. Normal operating session has been scheduled for Friday, April 1st, 2011 at the normal time. Here’s to a long life for the power supplies!

Power Supplies and Other Hazards

It would appear that the power supplies for the DCC system that keeps the freight and passengers rolling on the Black Canyon Railroad will be out of service for a while longer – long enough, at least, to cancel this week’s operating session.

We are all looking forward to getting back on the throttles.

2011 Update

As a part of trying to keep spam off the blog, the older posts have had comments closed. I apologize for the inconvenience this may cause; please e-mail any comments regarding older posts to bcrraz AT gmail DOT com.

In answer to some of the comments that didn’t get spammed, but were from real people:

Track Plan: I am in the process of trying to get either overhead photos taken and stitched together, or an accurate track plan drawn for the various areas spoken of in the tour of the layout.

Location of the layout: as mentioned in here on the “About” page, the layout is currently located in the former Arizona room of the Superintendent’s house in the middle of Phoenix, Arizona. If you would like to visit/tour/view the railroad, please contact us at the e-mail address listed above.

Increasing Traffic: We have plenty of traffic on the railroad, thank you.

Increasing the Length: The main line is plenty long right now, thank you. Once we find a permanent home for the layout, we will be increasing the length at that time, but I don’t think we will need anyone’s help.

Template for the Blog: We are using the Atahualpa theme, with the latest updates of WordPress. If you can’t find WordPress or Atahualpa using Google or another search engine, perhaps you shouldn’t be on the net?

Yes, the first two entries are honest answers, the last three are addressing about 90% of the spam that tries to hit the blog. If you have submitted a comment lately and you have not received an answer, please e-mail to the address above and I will reply here after diggin your comment out of the spam.

In other news – the power supplies for the layout were sent to Digitrax for servicing, and once they were installed back on the road they failed to work. Not being 100% sure of the problem, we are opting to have Richard (an electrical engineer type by trade) take a look at the issue before we send them back to Digitrax. For now, this means that operating session are suspended until we get the power supplies back on line.

At the last Annual Meeting, the vote was unanimous to have the current board continue in their positions.

Operating Session 8/20/2010

Normal operating session, short crew, and still refining the schedule #38 update. Dave, Bob, Richard, Cary, and Harold were in attendance.

More video!

Let me know in the comments section (“Come Aboard!”) below when you’ve had enough video. I promise I’ll try to use a higher resolution than my cell phone next time.

Operating Session 8/6/2010

We have been working out the bugs on Schedule 38. Some tightening up of times here, some rearranging of times there – we are pretty close to the final version.

Let’s see if this works: (updated – actual videos now! 8/26/10)

Have fun, and watch for more videos in the future, now that the webmaster knows how to play!
