Cary has been active in model railroading since his eighth birthday when he received a Bachmann® train set. He has been involved with the Black Canyon Railroad since the mid-1990s when he met Harold Shelton during a banner workshop at their church.

Cary is the owner and sole employee of casework by cary, a custom woodworking shop. He also is active on his Homeowners Association board, serving as the Treasurer and having been an officer of the Eagle Pass HOA Board since 2002.
